What are our favorite books?
Goals we are working on
We have been busy learning different strategies to help us become better readers. We focus all year on four categories of strategies to help us with our learning and our goals : CAFE (Comprehension, Accuracy, Fluency, and Expanded Vocabulary). Each time we add a new strategy to our repertoire, we stick it up on the board (see above) and I also add it to the list below! Please encourage your child to use these strategies while reading at home!
REMEMBER: The best way to be a better reader is to read a lot in your good fit range!
Strategies We Have Covered This Year...
Comprehension strategies
visualization, making connections between different texts, using text features, Using Background Knowledge BK, Identifying New Learning NL, ask questions when reading, voracious reading, compare and contrast, what's the message, character traits, point of view, lingering questions, recounting a story using SOMEBODY WANTED BUT SO THEN, making inferences, determining importance, making predictions, paraphrasing, identifying the main idea in a non-fiction text
Accuracy strategies
Chunking a word up (split the word to figure out what it is) and flipping the sound (short or long vowels, hard or soft sounds), Breaking up words using CAD Compounds / Affixes/ Dividing Syllables, Skip and Go Back, Using the Picture, voracious reading, use spelling patterns
Fluency strategies
Finding a good fit book (use the 5 finger rule with errors to help find the perfect level for you), Adjusting your reading rate, voracious reading, pay attention to punctuation, read with expression, re-read for speed, pay attention the RHYTHM, RHYME, REPETITION, and ALLITERATION in poetry, do "cold" and "hot" reads
Expanding Vocabulary Strategies
Tune into new words, use a dictionary, use a glossary, word choice, voracious reading, use your BK + text clues to figure out the meaning of the word
